Night of the Living Dead 3D (2006)

One look at the poster for Night of the Living Dead 3D and you'll be asking yourself the same question. This movie has to be "crazy", right?  Well, I guess that depends on your definition of "crazy".  What might appear crazy to one person would be hum-drum to another.  Each person must draw their own conclusions.  We'll look at a couple areas where one would assume Night of the Living Dead 3D is the "craziest" of the bunch.

1. "3D! This is gonna be sick!".   Don't get your hopes up.  Most of the 3D effects are reserved for the "pointing an object at the screen" variety.  Aim a shovel at the screen - wowza!  3D.  Hold a joint up to the screen - tee hee!  3D!  To be honest, I kept checking my 3D glasses for defects as most of the film is shot for a 2D audience.

This is what 3D was made for.

2. "Sid Haig is in it.  That's crazy!"  Haig is arguably the only real "actor" in the film.  His character, Gerald Tovar, serves as much needed book ends to the story.  Unfortunately, he isn't dressed in a clown suit a la House of a 1,000 Corpses.   Simply having Haig in a movie does not lend to it being crazy.  That said, he is the most interesting character in the film.

3. "This has to be goriest in the series!" Tom Savini's 1991 version of Night of the Living Dead upped the gore ante over the original.   One could easily assume that this version of Night of the Living Dead would be exponentially more gory than the last.  You know what they say about "assuming" things.  Night of the Living Dead 3D may contain less gore than the original.  It's anyone's guess which audience the producers were trying to satisfy.

The 3D tombstones really add to the terror of this scene.

Night of the Living Dead 3D deserves some credit for attempting to introduce some new plot elements to what is a very well tread story.  At one point, the story veers into Texas Chainsaw Massacre territory.  It would have been nice to see these plot elements explored with more depth.   Given all the remakes of Night of the Living Dead, even the lamest plot twist is met with enthusiastic curiosity.

So, is a little 3D worth sitting through another version of Night of the Living Dead?  Probably not.  There are some bare breasts thrown in for good measure.  Maybe that's all you need.  In that case, you're crazy.
