Variety reports that Sony Screen Gems have purchased the movie rights to Capcom's Devil May Cry video game series. Screen Gems releases the other Capcom game-to-movie franchise, Resident Evil, and the hope is to take advantage of the 4 Devil May Cry games and repeat the success of 2002's Resident Evil and the subsequent three sequels. Screenwriter Kyle Ward was hired to adapt the games into a screenplay. Ward has done this before, having adapted the script for the delayed Kane & Lynch.
The first Devil May Cry was initially created to be the third Resident Evil game, but its unique style eventually convinced Capcom to turn it into its own game. The game franchise follows the Bieber-coiffed Dante as he tries to avenge his mothers death by destroying demons. Devil May Cry 4 was released in 2008.
