According to all involved, everyone associated with Zombieland wants to make a sequel. However, none of them are confident one will happen. Jesse Eisenberg doesn't think a sequel will happen. Woody Harrelson? The same. Director Ruben Fleischer apparently feels the same way, recently telling The Playlist that a sequel isn't looking good.
It’s something we’d all like to do, but the reality of it happening depends on finding a script that we’re all excited to get aboard, so until then that happens it’s gonna continue to be in the... "not-happening-process." The thing is that we’ve all said is the only reason to do it is if it’s better than the original and i don’t think anyone wants to do it, just to do it. And certainly no one is going to do it just for the money— it’s not like any of us could get rich off it anyway so I think, without trying to sound arrogant, the bar is super high. And we’ve been holding it to that.
Fleischer echoed his comments to I Am Rogue:
With Zombieland 2 it seems like as much as everyone would like to see that happen, it’s not happening anytime soon. At least not for me because I’m spoken for, for at least the next year. And I know Emma [Stone] has Spider-Man commitments and whatnot so I think we all want to (do it) in theory but as each day passes it seems less and less possible. I think if we had a script that we all loved and we were ready to go make it, it would have been made.
Now if Fleischer's comments about not having a script "we're all excited about" or that "we all loved" sounds like he's throwing screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick under the bus, that's because it's exactly what it sounds like.
That's strange to me, since, in September of last year, Fleischer said he had received an "early draft" of the Zombieland 2 script that he thought was "going to be amazing." Perhaps he's waiting for Reese and Wernick to finish another draft amongst all their many writing jobs, among them the scripts for Deadpool and G.I. Joe 2.
Meanwhile, Fleischer has kept himself continuously busy, finishing August's 30 Minutes or Less and shooting The Gangster Squad starting in September, so I can't see blaming the writers.
