RESIDENT EVIL 5 to Arrive in 2012

Sony Screen Gems is clearly looking to cash-in quickly on the success of Resident Evil: Afterlife.

ComingSoon reports that Screen Gems has set a release date of September 14, 2012. That's like, next year! Why am I surprised? Apocalypse arrived two years after the original, while Extinction was released three years later, and Afterlife three years after Extinction. That's a whole year less in between! YOWZA!

The real surprise, or concern, is that there is no script (that we know of). Franchise screenwriter (and director of Afterlife and the original movie) Paul W.S. Anderson is already working on an adaptation of The Three Musketeers, which won't open until October. If Anderson is involved (and there's no reason to think that he won't considering he's either written, produced, directed, or a combination of all three on every Resident Evil movie so far and his wife Milla Jovovich is the franchise's star), that means he likely won't be writing the sequel until he has to do press for the movie in September or October.

Resident Evil 5 will also be likely shot in 3-D, considering it's what helped make Afterlife such a big hit. That's less than a year for Anderson to potentially, write and direct another Resident Evil in 3-D before September of next year.

YOWZA!
