RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION Gets an Official Synopsis and Horrible New Title

Sony Screen Gems has yet to get the promotional train chugging for Resident Evil: Retribution, allowing Milla Jovovich's Twitter do most of the work for them, but have finally shown signs that they've thought about  the upcoming sequel - at least for all of 15 seconds.  While we are still without a trailer, Screen Gems has released the sequel's official synopsis, which starts off by  revealing that the studio has devised one of the worst sequel titles in recent memory. Check it out: "The wildly successful film franchise adaptation that has grossed nearly $700 million worldwide to the popular video game series, Resident Evil, returns in its highly anticipated fifth installment, RE5IDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION in state-of-the art 3D. "

Re5ident Evil: Retribution? Really?

It reminds me of when Final Destination 5 decided to call itself 5nal Destination for a few days until everyone sobered up and realized they were playing around with a movie that cost millions of dollars to make. Let's hope Screen Gems has a similar revelation. [UPDATE: They have, the title is back to just Resident Evil: Retribution.]

As for the official synopsis, let's say it sounds a little familiar:

The Umbrella Corporation's deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race's last and only hope, ALICE (Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella's most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

If that synopsis seems familiar it's because it's BASICALLY THE SAME PLOT AS THE OTHER MOVIES. Why not just say, "Milla Jovovich is back as Alive. She will probably fight a zombie or two and try to stop the Umbrella Corporation. Other characters will show up too."

Anyway, at least those other characters will be from the video game with Leon S. Kennedy (Johann Urb), Barry Burton (Kevin Durand) and Ada Wong (Li Bingbing) all appearing in Retribution. Boris Kodjoe will be back as Luther, and Michelle Rodriguez, Oded Fehr, and Colin Salmon will all be back as the characters they played in previous Resident Evil movies, despite the fact that they're dead. Should we guess that Alice wasn't the only one cloned? We can and we did. We'll find out more on September 14th, when Retribution hits theaters. [IGN]
