The box office success of Zombieland extended to every person involved in the movie. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired to script G.I. Joe 2 and an adaptation of Deadpool, Jesse Eisenberg went on to The Social Network, Emma Stone landed in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, Abigail Breslin went to Broadway to play Helen Keller (debatable two steps back), and Woody Harrelson was offered so many projects he'll barely have any time to head back to his Hawaii home and get baked between yoga sessions.
Meanwhile, director Ruben Fleischer has been piling up projects to follow 30 Minutes or Less, his upcoming comedy with Eisenberg that opens on August 12, 2011. ComingSoon reports that Warner Bros. is negotiating with Fleischer to direct Gangster Squad, based on a series of LA Times articles about a "a band of secret "off the record" police task force who went after Meyer Harris "Mickey" Cohen, a high-profile gangster who was a member of the "Jewish Mafia" in the 1940's."
While it's exciting that Fleischer will be able to direct an unofficial sequel to The Untouchables, we have to ask: WHAT ABOUT ZOMBIELAND 2?? With the Mike White-penned Babe in the Woods also in the works, along with an untitled buddy cop movie he sold to Dreamworks, it's a wonder where Gangster Squad will fit, though either project could come before Zombieland 2.
In September, Fleischer admitted he'd read an "early" draft of the Zombieland 2 script, but Reese revealed in November that he and Wernick were still working on the script. No release date has been announced for the sequel, nor a production start date, and with the lead Zombieland actors filling their schedules with movies, it might be a long wait for the sequel.
