[Rec] 2 (known to average American audiences as the sequel to that foreign movie Quarantine was based on) won't see theaters until July, with Magnet Releasing also putting the movie out on VOD platforms a month before, but there are already two more [Rec]'s in the works.
Spain's Filmax Entertainment has greenlighted the films, which will divide the writing and directing team of Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The first film, [Rec] Genesis, will be written by Plaza and [Rec] co-co-screenwriter Luis Berdejo and will explore the origins of the virus that ravaged a Spanish apartment building. Plaza will direct the movie, currently scheduled for a fall 2011 release.
[Rec] Apocalypse will follow a year later in 2012 and will close out the franchise (or just set up mas sequels). Balagueró will direct once he's finished with his upcoming thriller, Sleep Tight (a.k.a. Flatmate). There are little details about Apocalypse's plot, but if the title is any indication, the virus may venture out from the apartment building it inhabited for the first two [Rec]'s.
Filmax has enjoyed a huge amount of success with [Rec] and [REC] 2. The sequel enjoyed great box office totals in Europe, scoring well not only in Spain but in France, where audiences normally don't go into a movie theater unless Woody Allen has directed the movie.
If [Rec] 2 is anything like [Rec], we say bring 'em on.
