Downloads May Prevent Zombieland Sequel

Zombieland co-screenwriter Rhett Reese Tweeted on Tuesday that the amount of torrent file downloading of the movie could prevent a sequel.

Zombieland currently the most pirated movie on bit torrent. Over one million downloads and counting.

Beyond depressing. This greatly affects the likelihood of a Zombieland 2.

Reese even hit a few fellow Twits who made their pirated viewing public with this:

You realize we do what we do for money, right? Same as you.

While we are cautious over anything that would stop a Zombieland sequel, Reese may be a little reactionary here. As TorrentFreak points out, The Dark Knight was the biggest download of 2008, and Warner Bros. can't wait to make a sequl for that. Furthermore, Zombieland grossed more than $60.8 million in just 17 days, higher than 2004's Dawn of the Dead, which grossed $59 million domestically and, ultimately, $102 million worldwide. Zombieland stands currently at $83 million worldwide, needing to make up some money overseas to completely take over Dawn of the Dead as the most profitable zombie movie ever.

What we think is this: while BitTorrent downloading may not prevent a sequel, it may mean that a sequel will have to be shot in 3-D, which is a studio's sure-fire way to get butts into seats. Either way, the prospect doesn't sound too awful.

If a studio sees a movie make almost a $100 million dollars and become the highest download currently with over 100 million downloads, and doesn't want to make a sequel, who exactly deserves blame? The downloaders or the studio?
